MONTHLY MEMO
The BIG BAIL OUT and Other Self-Deceptions
October, 2008
Dear Reader,
Are you ready to try other parts of the amusement park? Are you tired of the ride you are on and would like to experience a different one? You might want to consider getting off this roller coaster and go over there and get on the "it's a small world after all" ride. You might enjoy it.
We are not here to suffer so stop doing it. We are here to grow and that includes growing up or, as the case may be, out. We're still in the amusement park so choose again the ride you want to experience. All of what is going on in your personal/ private life and in societal life is about reflection of what we have created, our part in it, both personally and collectively and what we need to do to improve or change it. We can try to ignore the obvious or blame our parents, society, partners, jobs, clients, children our health or the government. (Who did I leave out?) Truth be told, we are at the great "accountability" phase of modernity and our personal former choices. "Ignorance of the law is no defense."
Now ask yourself, if the collective world is showing a shortage of money and manners, where did it go? Who has it? Has it all been taken to the big bank in the sky and deposited for future generations? Did change come in through a door we didn't know existed? Are we or have we been in denial and distraction? What do you think?
If you are reading this and are aware of my work, then you know the answers. This "bailout" has been coming for a long, long time and is a necessary phase of our own personal and collective development. Just imagine if we had kept going the way we were headed. What a relief to have a force that can put on the brakes of this runaway train and help us to see ourselves and the results of our choices. Does this sound like suffering? Not necessarily. It depends on HOW you choose to perceive it.
The brakes have not only been applied to our finances and jobs, they have also been applied to our lifestyles, our emotional hot buttons and our belief systems. This is why this is such an important time for us all. It may feel as if there is no place to hide (or to put your money) but, in a larger perspective, it is light and fresh air being brought to a cluttered, stale and dated house. What do we do with it? What would you do to a house like that? Wouldn't you clean it up, get rid of stuff that is not needed, and bring it up to date with modern times. That will take energy, time and money. Welcome to the next 15 years. Cleaning house literally and figuratively, personally and collectively is the direction we are going. See us all now as a big janitorial service. We start by cleaning up ourselves.
Several years ago I read a small book by Dr. Abraham T. Twerski, "Addictive Thinking Understanding Self-deception." It pointed out how addicted we become to certain people, habits, lifestyles and lies. Consequently, we self-deceive and live a life that does not support, nourish or, in the long-run, sustain us. Just as in any addiction, in order to get out of the addiction to the drug of self-deception, we must go through a withdrawal period. Detoxing is not pretty nor fun but necessary to cure ourselves of this drug. Look for many 90-day rehab programs for the self-deception drug. They will come in disguises but I bet there will be many people making a comfortable living selling these programs.
October is a great month to start the rehab program. It is the 10th month of the year, or a number one with a zero. It is a new beginning within an existing structure of the number one, 2008. 2008, numerologically speaking, is a one Universal Year. So look at this month as improvements to a new beginning. See it as your 90 day-Rehab entry and commit to coming clean on how you have self-deceived. Was it blaming your illness on a job? Was it staying with an abusive spouse? Was it thinking you are too old, young, poor or tired? Was it blaming your parents for rejecting you or making you feel unloved? Was it the sexual abuse you had as a child? Was it the loss of your home equity? What is your drug of choice? Does it still work for you? Is the pay off from this type of thinking helping you feel more at peace? Was it really financial security that you were seeking, or was it really inner peace and contentment?
You are always at choice in your own life. ALWAYS. You can choose again and again and again. This is a golden time to make more supportive choices in all areas of your life. Many of our crutches are being removed so we can learn to walk without them. Most of us have relied on our "retirement plans" to see us safely into our latter years. We thought they will save us or protect us. There are two deceptions here: 1) that there is such a thing as retirement. The Soul never came here to retire Repeat, the Soul never came to this earth to retire. Thank goodness retirement is going away. Stop planning on retirement. Plan on how long you want to stay here and what do you need to do to change careers, your views on relaxation and recreation and your deeper beliefs on aging. 2) Your investments will protect you. Where is that written? Your ideas and ability to begin anew are your true protections. 401k's can go up, down and away. Housing can go up, down and away. Your ideas and the ability to begin anew are forever yours. No outer event can take them away. A friend, John Davis, once said to me that "part of staying young is the art of lowering the 'resistance' to starting over." What are you resisting? Go to the place within wherever you don't want to change and see it in a higher light. If we see that place as only suffering, we may not change. Stop living in the resistance. It is not "oh no, not again." Take yourself through the "eye of the needle" Inside there is peace.
In future Monthly Memos I will speak of more ideas that can assist you through these times. I think it is helpful to have a bird's eye view of what is going on but we also need the therapeutic and practical support. I will do my best to offer them.
In the meantime, breathe and strengthen yourself. I have said for quite some time to simplify, live beneath your means and increase your income through your new ideas. Listen, we all have something great in us, it's time you believed it. You may have to prime the pump by doing work or activity that is bizarre to you. That's okay, get in the flow of energy of people, places and things. As long as it is legal and ethical. Try fun too. Make it a habit that you will have more fun for the next 90 days. What a concept. Suffering is unattractive. We are all here such a short window of time approximately 120 years get out of your own way and reveal your ideas and your new beliefs.
Halloween is coming. Give yourself a treat and stop tricking yourself. I like voluntary choices rather than the alternative.
Register to vote and then VOTE. We are choosing our future representatives and leaders. Remember, they reflect us. Have we become smarter, more reflective since the last major election?
Until next month,
Keep trusting yourself,
Gail
